The Best Places to Cool Off in Austin, TX

With temperatures exceeding 90 degrees from June through September, it’s no surprise that swimming is a favorite pastime in Austin. Austinites are lucky to have some of the best natural swimming in the state available for their enjoyment. Deep Eddy Pool and Barton Springs Pool, both located near downtown Austin, are two great places to cool off on hot summer days. Both are conveniently located within walking distance of many great restaurants and bars.

Located in Zilker Park, the Barton Springs Pool has been an Austin favorite for many years. Barton Springs is a spring-fed natural pool that stays at 68°F year-round, making it a perfect place to cool off in the summer. Framed by grassy hills and shady oak trees, the pool draws a diverse crowd of visitors, from avid swimmers to college students to families.

The depth of the large pool ranges from very shallow to 18 feet deep. Facilities include restrooms with changing rooms and showers, and a snack bar with picnic tables. The pool is open all year from 5 am to 10 pm from Friday to Wednesday. Admission fees range from $1 to $3 and season passes are also available.

Just a few miles from Barton Springs Pool, you’ll find Deep Eddy Pool. Located at 401 Deep Eddy Ave, it is the oldest man-made pool in Texas. A former 1920s resort featuring cabins, campgrounds, grassy hills, a diving board, slides, and zip line, the pool is now owned and operated by the City of Austin.

The pool’s natural water comes from a 35-foot hand-dug well, and the water temperature ranges from 65-75F. Additional amenities at Deep Eddy Pool include a BBQ grill, picnic tables, and a playground. Deep Eddy is open year-round with limited hours during the winter months. Events are held there throughout the summer and include swim meets and a series of family movie nights. Entry to the pool ranges from $1 to $3.
