It is essential that we try to make our homes safer by following a few simple guidelines. While following home safety guidelines can’t prevent all of these assaults, they can help keep you and your family safer while you’re home. Let’s take a look at some important tips that can help.

1. Get new locks and keys – Unfortunately, many women live in apartments and houses that are not totally safe. Did you know that 64% of US homeowners have knowingly passed their key around to others? If you can afford to change the locks, do so. This is an easy and effective way to secure your home.

2. Protect your parts – Lend spare parts? Do you have a hidden key? Think twice before doing this. Keys are lost or stolen… people can share information with the wrong people. Be smart and cautious.

3. Maximize line of sight – Make sure you can see people approaching your house and at your doors. Trim bushes and trees so you have an excellent line of sight. Have a peephole in the door or a small window where you can see visitors at your door before you open it.

4. Keep doors and windows closed – Stay protected by closing all doors and windows, particularly at night. This is a simple task and makes it more difficult for someone to break into your home.

5. Use common sense – Have a good porch light and security lighting; be careful at night when opening the door; Leave a light on when you’re asleep and when you’re away. Don’t be afraid, just be cautious and use common sense.

6. Add additional security devices – This is an essential step. Extra locks, locks that cannot be picked, secure doors and windows… these are essential steps. Motion detectors and alarms can also be helpful. Adding some affordable and simple security devices can help make your home more secure.
