Getting Guidance for Online Success: Part Two

Match time and budget

If you are considering receiving some type of training, then:

  • Have a list of things you need help with (eg keyword research, niche research, websites, etc.)
  • Have a budget, such as how much you can afford each month and for how long.
  • Know what your level of commitment is: how much time you can dedicate.

Don’t commit too much, or your budget may go to waste. At the same time, you need to be consistent with how you use the time you spend building your business, because that’s what “a business” is.

For example, if you buy training for $150 a month, say, for 3 individual sessions, and you end up losing one, then you’re wasting your hard-earned money. Likewise, make sure you allow time for the “follow-up” work that comes from your training, or you’ll just fall behind and waste those dollars again.

Example
Let’s say you buy a course based on 3 individual sessions per month (with unlimited email support). Sessions will last between 1 and 3 hours (say up to a total of 9 hours per month).

Then, you’ll also need to minimally match that time with a commitment to follow up on the work, putting the lesson you’ve learned into practice.

This is your investment, it does not affect the trainer if you fall behind, it is your money that you waste, so with a little planning you can schedule well.

Some trainers are very adamant about sticking to a set time for sessions; others, like myself, believe in making some concession to “Murphy’s Law” and will renegotiate the session time, within reason.

Some types of coaching and what to expect

  • One on one – very personal and directed to the needs of the client.
  • Group training: it can be more cost-effective since the trainer distributes the charge among several people. A good course will also allow time for questions and answers, so your personal issues can be brought up on the spot.
  • Video and Audio Training – This is where you purchase a training DVD series. The problem with this type of training is that you can’t ask questions on the spot and the lessons may not be as specific as you need. However, good video courses should cover all the basics.

A good trainer or being advice to succeed online It should also provide you with extras like unlimited email support for the duration of the course and recording of your sessions.
